Recalling my flight from Toronto to Hong Kong, I came across an article about a National Park.  I did not recall the location of the place as I was half falling asleep and half awake all the way, between reading, watching videos and playing video games.  I did store the name of the park in my phone so one day I could retrieve and research on it.  This evening, I managed to go through the notes to see Gwaii Haanas National Park & Hot Spring Island.  A quick google search gave me Parks Canada and a chance to learn more about the Pacific Coast!

Things to do: Sea kayaking (for you greg and O), hotspring-bathing, camping, hiking, fishing, photography, motor and sail boating...etc

Quick Facts:
1. Gwaii Haanas was rated No.1 Park Destination in North America in 2005.
2. No more than 3000 visitors each year.

Though the black area is spreading - like spilled ink.  Sigh.

I am going to have my iPod evaluated on replacement cost.

Happy Birthday Sam!

In celebration of Sam's birthday, as friends from junior high school Patrick Kaleung Sam and I gathered at an Italian-American restaurant - Amaroni's Little Italy. By the time we finished the three appetizers - Soft Shell Crabs, Clams in Garlic White Wine Sauce, Prosciutto and Melons; and two mains - Classic Pizza (sausage, peppers, onions & mushrooms), Penne with Shrimps and Chicken, our taste buds and stomach were completely satisfied!

Rotating Sushi Bar

One of my favourite place is Rotating Sushi Bar where sushi plates move along a conveying belt, so that you get to look at the plates for their appearance and freshness before you take it for your own enjoyment!

We had dinner at Nagoyaka Tei on a weekday and there was still a lineup for tables!  That's so typical of Hong Kong...  anyway, the wait wasn't long as most of the people ahead of us were couples, and we were family of five.  We got seated at a booth and immediately we went at it picking the sushi plates from the conveying belt.  Ended up eating so much sushi and fish!  Yum!

Trucker Cap

For those who are my friends, yes you, since you're reading this - you know I never like wearing hat because to me I don't look good wearing one.  I thought that I had long given up on the search until today when I came across this trucker cap in a street market on Fa Yuen Street!  I know it was a trendy item long ago and I never gave it much thought.  I was very attracted to the black and white contrast and its simplicity.  The white foamy part in front retains its shape, balancing my big head and the cap.  Finally I have found a cap that I think I look good in.  Don't you think so?  Oh yeah, did I mention the price?  HK$18/CAD$3

Recent Obsession - TEE

After seeing the TEASE exhibition//J's tee design//tee for Chlo~, I have been digging everything about TEEs and prints.  A blank TEE serves as a blank canvas and it offers infinite possibilities. I have yet to make a print on my own, though I have gone through a lot of tees in the last couple of days on my shopping trips.

The 19C Prirate

張保仔, Cheung Po Tsai (in Cantonese) was a 19th century Chinese pirate.  Named after the pirate, the boat runs in the Victoria Harbour and offers tourists an alternative way to see Hong Kong Island and Kowloon.

Patterns Patterns Patterns

I can't help but notice the variety of patterns and colours on the jockeys' costumes during the races. Pictured below is a wallpaper printed with these small costumes and of course I took a snapshot of it.

Before each race the horses come out of the rooms (below the screen) to the Parade Ring for a quick review.  Then the horses are led to the gates on the racecourse in preparation for the race.

Horse racing has always been a popular activity or hobby in Hong Kong that appeals very much to the gamblers in all of us.  It is a little bit of stereotyping, but consider the popularity of Mah Jong and you will know what I mean.  As for this Sunday, after breakfast at Paris Cafe, we were on our way to the Racecourse for the very first time!

There are two racecourses in Hong Kong, one in Happy Valley (HK Island) and the one that opened today is in Shatin (New Territories).  From September to June is the racing season.  Of course, before the racing season ends this month, I ought to experience the largest spectator sport in Hong Kong AND the excitement that only watching live races can bring.

Unlike 649 or Mark Six (HK), Horse Racing takes on a different type of betting experience.  The variables are very well documented in newspapers and HK Jockey Club website.  The races are broadcasted live on TV and Radio.

Placing some bets and watching the races is a lot of fun but do not get addicted!

Pottinger Street

Off the escalators, I walked over to the next few streets. Pottinger Street (砵典乍街 / 石板街) is well-known for the stone-slab steps that still remain today. Lined with traditional street stalls, they mainly sell ribbons, bows and buttons. On another street, one of the stalls that catches my eyes sells these colourful lanterns -

I spent HK$1.70 for the ferry ride from TsimShaTsui to Central, heading to IFC.  After getting half-price movie tickets ($40/ticket) for this Sunday (Da Vinci Code) at the cinema, I explored a bit of Central by taking these Escalators.  It always amazes me that this structure is built to serve just one purpose, people mover.  In a dense urban area, these elevated walkways are neccessary to alleviate pedestrian traffic from the roads.

The "Bus Uncle" clip made quite a headline in Hong Kong. Recorded by a video phone was the argument between a teenager and a man in his 40's. All the people involved (except the "uncle"), the teenager (Alvin) and the photographer (John) called in and were interviewed by radio station. Check out the clip!
Take a breather, afterall, everyone is under immense pressure! hahaha!

Two-day celebration for Mother's Day

Day 1 - Saturday May 13

Watami

Dinner at Watami Japanese Casual Restaurant. It is similar to some Japanese Izakaya where the dishes come in small tapas-sized portions. The difference is that they do serve sushi and sashimi (not at izakaya). My favourite is Watami's Drinks menu!

Sake with Sakura Syrup - Sakura syrup is served in the shot glass, then sake is poured right before your eyes until it overflows into the wooden box.  You can then drink from shotglass first, then finish what's left in the box, which is sweeter because the syrup flows out of the glass at the beginning.

On Mother's day we had dimsum at Chao Inn,
a Chiu-Chow Style restaurant at One Peking Road, Tsimshatsui.
With delicious dimsum, nice interior, and one of the best views to HK Island, it has become my favourite dim-sum restaurant!
